Claim

Applying oil to hair every day makes hair grow longer and thicker quickly.

VerdictMisleading

Checked against nih.gov

Oil makes hair soft, shiny and less likely to break, but it does not make hair grow longer or thicker quickly. Hair grows at its own speed, and no oil changes that.

What experts say

  • Hair oils mostly work on the outside of the hair — they soften it, hold moisture in and give shine.12
  • Coconut oil can reduce the loss of protein from hair, so hair gets less damaged and breaks less.2
  • There is no proof that putting oil on the scalp every day makes hair grow longer or thicker, or that it makes hair grow quickly.12
  • Pulling hair tight for a long time, like in tight braids or buns, can damage hair and make it fall.2

Why people believe it

In India, oiling hair has been a family habit for generations, and many people believe it stops hair loss and adds shine and volume.

What to do

  • Use oil if you like how it makes your hair feel, but do not expect it to speed up hair growth.12
  • Wash your hair when it feels oily or sweaty — washing every day or on alternate days is fine if your scalp needs it.2
  • Avoid tight braids, buns and pulling hair, so hair does not break or fall because of the pulling.2
