Claim

Drinking turmeric milk makes cold and cough go away.

VerdictMisleading

Checked against WHO, NHS, CDC

Turmeric milk is a popular home remedy, but it is not proven to make cold and cough go away. Most colds are caused by viruses and get better on their own in 1 to 2 weeks. Turmeric's curcumin may ease symptoms a little, but that is not the same as a cure.

What experts say

  • Most colds and coughs are caused by viruses. They usually get better on their own within 1 to 2 weeks.24
  • Antibiotics do not help colds or coughs caused by viruses.234
  • There is some evidence that turmeric's active part, curcumin, may reduce cold symptoms and shorten a cold. This was tested as a supplement, not as turmeric milk.6
  • Warm drinks and honey can soothe a cough, but they do not cure the cold. Honey should not be given to babies under 1 year.23
  • Cough and cold medicines have little evidence that they help, and some are not safe for young children.234

Why people believe it

Turmeric milk is a traditional home remedy, and colds often get better on their own. So when someone drinks it and feels better after a few days, it can look like the turmeric milk worked.

What to do

  • If symptoms are bad or last long, see a doctor.24

See a doctor if

  • High temperature lasting more than 3 days.24
  • Cough lasting more than 3 weeks.24
  • Coughing up blood or bloodstained mucus.2
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain.4
